Feel safe.
Open your senses.
Meet the reef.
For people who love the ocean but get nervous in it. Six days in Tulamben, Bali, learning to feel at home in the water.
why this journey
We wanted the sea to feel like
somewhere you belong,
not somewhere you have to be brave.
Maybe you can’t swim well, or at all.
Maybe deep water makes you uneasy.
The Sea In Me is a guided week of learning the basics,
noticing what’s around you, and exploring at your own pace.
You don’t have to become fearless.
You just have to want to be closer to the sea.

Arrive & find your feet
Orientation · Water safety
Our airport pickup to Tulamben is arranged around 12 pm, so please plan your flight around it. The drive typically takes about 3 hours, and if you prefer you can arrive a day earlier and spend the night in Kuta. The programme starts when you arrive: after settling in, we talk about how everyone feels about the water, then meet the equipment: mask, snorkel and flotation, fitted to you. We finish with a first supported time in the sea, at your own pace, and a short chat about what you noticed.
Meet the reef
Through the lens
Taking photos changes what you notice, so we practise using a camera without losing track of the reef, or of where you are in the water. Our rule of thumb: shoot what you naturally see, not what you have to search for.
The wreck
Our first guided snorkel, in the morning, takes everything you’ve practised to Tulamben’s most famous sight: the USAT Liberty, a US Army cargo ship torpedoed in 1942, beached here, and moved into the sea by the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung. It’s a relaxed tour, not a test. Float, look, and enjoy it, with your guides beside you.
Give back, then after dark
Conservation sharing · Night snorkelling
We spend part of our last full day in a conservation sharing session, learning about conservation practices on site and what each of us can take home to our daily lives. Then, after dinner, we see the reef after dark on a night snorkelling adventure, from the shore along the resort.
Check out & head home
Travel thoughtfully
How we try to do this well.
Safe for Us, Gentle on the Reef
Safe and gentle turn out to be the same thing. If you know how to float, stay still and control your movements, you’re far less likely to kick or grab coral, or drift somewhere you shouldn’t. If you know how to use a camera responsibly, you can take photos without chasing animals, crowding them or losing track of where you are.
That’s what we mean by looking after ourselves and the ocean. Learn the right methods first, enjoy the reef, and leave it as you found it.
Things We Are Working On
We’d like to set up a reef conservation project in Tulamben, and it’s still in the setting-up phase. That means there’s nothing finished to show you yet, and we’d rather say so than promise something we can’t deliver yet.
Before anything else, we want to understand what the reef needs, what local people already know and do, and whether this is something the community would like us to be part of. If it’s going to last, it needs to make sense to the people who live here.
For now, the last step of The Sea In Me is learning about conservation practices on site, and thinking about what each of us can take home to our daily lives.

FAQs
No. The Sea In Me is designed for people who may not swim well, or at all, as well as people who have never snorkelled. We use properly fitted flotation, and our qualified safety team decides, person by person, what is right in the water. Nobody is taken into deeper water just because they attended a workshop.
That is exactly who this is for. You can pause, ask for help, watch first, or skip any activity, at any time.
No. It is not a certification, and nobody is tested or ranked. It is a guided week to learn the basics, notice what is around you, and explore at your own pace. People who have snorkelled before are welcome too.
Yes, families are welcome. The programme is for ages 10 and over. Guests under 18 are accompanied in the water by a parent or guardian, who joins alongside our qualified team rather than replacing it.
The USAT Liberty was a US Army cargo ship, torpedoed in January 1942 and beached at Tulamben. When Mount Agung erupted in 1963 it was moved into the sea, where it now lies just off the beach, with its shallowest part a few metres below the surface. We snorkel it in the morning, and you do not need to dive to enjoy it.
It is part of the Bali programme, and we only go when conditions and your readiness are right. It happens after dinner, from the shore along the resort, after several days of practice in daylight, and you can choose to watch instead.
Our team are trained in first aid response and hold qualified dive rescue certification or above. First aid kits are also available at the resort. The nearest hospital to the resort would be Kubu Pratama Hospital, which is approximately 21KM or half an hour drive away.

We also share action cameras in the imaging session, if you have your own underwater camera or action camera, we encourage you to bring along for a better experience.
No. Breakfast is included on Days 2 to 5. We leave lunch and dinner open so you can choose where and what you eat. There is a convenience store 1 to 3 minutes’ walk from the resort, and a restaurant 3 minutes’ drive away.

We arrange the land transfer from Ngurah Rai International Airport to Tulamben. Our pick-up is around 12 pm, so please plan your flight around it. The drive typically takes about 3 hours.
